Comparison of Phacoemulsification Versus Non-Phacoemulsification in Risk of Posterior Capsular Opacification: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Abstract


Phacoemulsification and non-phacoemulsification (Extracapsular Cataract Extraction and Small Incision Cataract Surgery) are the most commonly used techniques in cataract surgery. Posterior capsular opacification is the most common complication after cataract surgery. This study proposed to review the risk of posterior capsular opacification correlates to surgical techniques. This study conducted thorough search in PubMed and Google Scholar with limitations to the last 10 years. Studies determining risk of posterior capsular opacification by comparing phacoemulsification and non-phacoemulsification were included. The data was assessed by a random-effects model using Cochrane Review Manager 5.4 and presented in Forest Plot. Six of 818 studies met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 2716 eyes were analysed statistically. The residual heterogeneity estimates test between studies was 63%. The p value of this study was 0.46. The odds ratio was 0.77 (95%CI 0.47-0.98). This study revealed that compared with non-phacoemulsification techniques, phacoemulsification has lower risk of developing posterior capsular opacification but not statistically significant.
