Abstract

Smoking behavior is a cause of premature death in productive age such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and respiratory tract disorders. Smoking habits that start in adolescence will increase dependence in old age. This study aims to explore the perspectives of adolescents aged 14-16 years regarding smoking behavior. The type of research used was a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach involving 8 teenagers using a snowball sampling technique. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with teenage smokers using a semi-structured interview guide. The results of the interviews were transcribed and thematic analysis carried out. Five themes were identified, namely (1) description of the motives for smoking behavior in adolescents; (2) negative self-concept; (3) the impact of smoking; (4) smoking cessation efforts; (5) obstacles experienced when trying to stop smoking. Smoking behavior in teenagers is greatly influenced by the circle of friends who often encourage or force them to try cigarettes and become addicted and find it difficult to stop smoking. Adolescents experience the effects of smoking behavior such as coughing, chest pain, and pleural effusion. Teenagers try to stop smoking because they are pursuing their dreams, doctor's advice because of health problems, parental prohibitions but because they experience withdrawal effects such as anxiety, irritability, fever and laziness in activities, which prevents teenagers from quitting smoking. Conclusion: Adolescents are still unable to determine good behavior to carry out so that they are increasingly at risk of becoming addicted to cigarette products which can affect their health in the future and there is a need for strict rules against adolescents who smoke.
