FAST TRACK: Mental Health Problems among Adolescents in the Working Area of Colol Public Health Center, East Manggarai Regency
Abstract
Adolescence is one group that is vulnerable to mental health problems. Adolescent mental health issues have not been thoroughly investigated in the working area of Colol Public Health Center with limited resources. The objectives of this study are to assess the prevalence of mental health problems among adolescents in the working area of Colol Public Health Center, East Manggarai Regency. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2023 in seven junior high schools and one senior high school in the working area of Colol Public Health Center. Four hundred and seventy-eight adolescents (aged 12-18 years old) selected through a consecutive sampling technique were included for data analysis. Self-reported strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess the subject’s mental health status, which is presented in a descriptive narrative. The results indicated that the most common mental health problems found in this study were emotional ( 27.0% ) and conduct problems (24.5%). There was no correlation between gender and the SDQ result, but we found a significant correlation between the educational levels of respondents with emotional problems (p=0.001) and total difficulties (p=0.002). The most common mental health problems found in this study were emotional and conduct problems. Adolescents may cope with these issues with the guidance of mental health experts through early detection and intervention.
