Abstract

Active phase I is an important stage in the labor process, characterized by the opening of the cervix from 4 to 10 cm. The long duration of this phase increases the risk of medical intervention as well as maternal and neonatal complications, especially in primigravida. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal gentle yoga in accelerating the active phase of labor in primigravida pregnant women. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only with control group approach. A total of 40 respondents were divided into two groups: 20 underwent prenatal gentle yoga for at least 4 weeks, and 20 as a control group. The intervention was conducted twice a week, consisting of breathing exercises, pelvic muscle stretching, and relaxation techniques. The duration of the active phase was measured using a partograph. Results showed that 80% of mothers in the yoga group experienced an active phase ≤ 5 hours, compared to 35% in the control group. Chi-Square test showed a significant association between yoga practice and acceleration of the first stage (p = 0.014). Logistic regression analysis yielded an odds ratio of 4.98 (95% CI: 1.32-18.74), indicating that participation in yoga increased the likelihood of faster labor by almost five times. These findings suggest that prenatal gentle yoga is an effective, safe, and easy-to-implement nonpharmacological intervention in antenatal care, and contributes to maternal physical and mental readiness. Integration of yoga in maternity care is recommended as an efficient promotive strategy to reduce the length of labor and improve the quality of the birth experience.
