Abstract

Stroke patients will generally experience muscle weakness in the limbs, especially in the upper extremities. This can be prevented through therapy to increase muscle strength in stroke patients. The purpose of this study was to increase upper extremity muscle strength through Constraint Induced Movement Therapy. The design of this study was a one group pre test-post test on 15 respondents of stroke patients who experienced upper extremity muscle weakness selected using purposive sampling technique. Then an intervention in the form of Constraint Induced Movement Therapy every day for 60 to 90 minutes within 1 month, because it is carried out on stroke patients in the first attack. Muscle strength was assessed using the Manual Muscle Testing scale before and after the intervention. The results of the observations were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. From the results of the study, it is known that the average muscle strength before the intervention was 2.53 and after the intervention was 3.53, with a p value of 0.000. It was concluded that Constraint Induced Movement Therapy was effective to improve upper extremity motor skills in stroke patients.
