Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health concern, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) being the most common form. Worldwide, an estimated 537 million adults aged 20–79 years (10.5% of the global adult population in this age group) are affected by diabetes (Kumar et al., 2024). According to the 10th edition of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), diabetes prevalence in Southeast Asia has risen over the past two decades, reaching 153 million cases. In Indonesia, the prevalence of diabetes increased from 6.2% in 2019 to 10.8% in 2021, positioning the country among the top 10 nations with the highest prevalence of T2DM and the steepest rise in cases globally. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between HbA1c, fasting blood glucose (FBG), and mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with T2DM. Methods: An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Participants were T2DM patients meeting predefined criteria at Dr. Moewardi Regional General Hospital in Surakarta, Indonesia. A total of 55 samples were collected using purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Analysis of 55 samples revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between FBG and MPV (p < 0.05), with a moderate correlation strength. In contrast, no significant association was observed between HbA1c and MPV (p > 0.05). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of regular monitoring of FBG, HbA1c, and MPV in T2DM patients to optimize treatment and enhance quality of life. The study demonstrates a significant correlation between FBG and MPV but no association between HbA1c and MPV.
